Actual and Factual
Let's start with the facts straight from their website!
Universe is categorized as a fingering/sock weight yarn. Universe XL is categorized as a light worsted/DK weight yarn. Each is offered in a variety of colors marked by numbers rather than names.
The Universe collections of yarn have long runs of gradient transitions with a glittery thread spun throughout. This metallic thread offers visible bling with minimal feel. The yarns are a premium acrylic and polyester blend. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what makes this or any acrylic premium, however, it is quite soft when compared to some other acrylic yarns on the market and in my stash.
Universe (standard) is 505yd/462m in length and 3.5oz/100g in weight. The suggested hook size is 4mm and the suggested needles size is 3mm.
Universe XL is 241yds/220m in length and 3.5oz/100g in weight. The suggested hook size is 6mm and the suggested needles size is 5mm.
My Experience
The first time I saw this yarn, I only paid attention to the colorways; they were all so beautiful. Universe standard was much thinner than I usually work with, so I struggled a lot at first. I found a tutorial to “triple up” the yarn and make it closer to a category 4 which helped me a lot. Since this first trial and error though, I have learned to work with other small-weight yarns. With the right hook size for the yarn and my tension, reminding myself to relax, and using simple stitches, I can enjoy working with this yarn.
My Favorite Projects for This Yarn
Shawls and scarves! That’s pretty much all I have made with these yarns, I’m not well-versed in garment-making at this time, but Hobbii does have plenty of wardrobe patterns for you to try.
